Welcome Back to School (a little late): How I Am Keeping Track

Welcome Back to School Everyone! We are still in the first nine weeks, right? So I can still welcome you back. Things have been a little crazy in my corner of the Deaf education world, evaluating new friends, developing a new schedule, learning a few new schools... You all know how it goes! However, I wanted to go ahead and share my new favorite trick of the year. Let me start by telling you WHY I NEEDED to develop something new. Last year, my data collection process was a spiral bound notebook and every session got written in the notebook. One notebook for all my kids, in chronological order. It worked great for me because I didn't need to remember to grab a student's notebook before I traveled to their school, and everything was in one place. However... Sensory Vocabulary Bin, AKA The Bin of Teaching Magic

Hello friends! I have another MOST exciting versatile tool for my trunk... Sensory Vocabulary Bin or as I like to call it... My Bin of Teaching Magic My friend is showing me the flower she found! I got this idea from a few different pinterest pins I read last week. I found out about these super awesome things called "Toobs;" you can see what they are here but I don't necessarily recommend buying them from here... I'll get to that. The reason I like these is because they are small, reasonably priced, and realistic looking (vs cartoon-like). I ended up purchasing the flowers, down on the farm, rainforest, fruits and vegetables, wild animals, and dinosaurs. I'm still torn on if I need the dinosaurs and I may end up taking them back; I think have some boys that would enjoy them but they didn't open up as many vocab opportunities as I was hoping - mainly due to my lack of dino knowledge and the fact that many of them don't have ASL signs that

Teaching from My Trunk... and the best dollar I've spent all year!

Welcome to Teaching from My Trunk! This is a blog all about efficient strategies for teachers of the Deaf/hard of hearing. Many of us are itinerant teachers, traveling between campuses, and therefore, we have to keep many of our materials in our cars. It is critical that we are efficient with the materials that we choose so that... 1) our trunks and cars don't look like a hot mess all the time. This makes my neat-freak husband happy... but it it also helps me have more calm in my mind! 2) our backs will thank us! When I carry too much stuff, my bag starts accumulating more and more and my back and shoulder starts to get a little upset. Being more efficient means less unnecessary materials. 3) we can waste less time searching for a game or activity to meet the need of one skill for one student. If we have materials that are versatile, hopefully we can spend less time digging through our trunks and have more time for teaching... and paperwork? :) My first versatile
